Introduction to Sangha Night

Sangha Night is a weekly class providing regular support for those interested in Buddhist practice. Each week we meditate and explore some aspect of Buddhism in its practical applications through workshops, talks, study, ritual, or discussion. Sangha is the community of individuals undertaking to live a way of life that fosters spiritual growth and development as communicated and exemplified by the Buddha.

The Sangha is considered a precious jewel in Buddhism. Why? Because it is extremely difficult to practice effectively without its support. Just one example is the challenge of establishing and maintaining a regular meditation practice at home, surrounded by all our familiar habits and distractions. Meditating with others can give us the boost we need to keep a home practice going. Sangha provides precious energy, inspiration, clarity and friendship along our way. Collective practice supports each of our individual efforts.

Sangha Night takes place in a special space dedicated to the benefit and development of all those who enter it - the San Francisco Buddhist Center. Tens of thousands of hours of meditation have taken place in the Center shrine room, creating an atmosphere of stillness and calm in the midst of a dynamic city.

Coming to Sangha Night, people can replenish themselves in a space and culture oriented towards Enlightenment. This can be a welcome respite from the mainstream consumer culture we usually inhabit. Hopefully, those who come will bring some calm back out to the world.
