Talk on the Story-Telling Project of the
Ex-Untouchables in India
By visiting Order member
Jayamati. Donations accepted.
Thursday,
April 11 (2002), 7pm
Ten years ago visiting Order
member Jayamati started working
with storytellers in the ex-untouchable communities in India that had
converted from the Hindu caste system to Buddhism. The Asvagosha project
involves teams of locally recruited volunteer storytellers that visit
villages and urban slums addressing issues facing the ex-untouchables
such as alcoholism, the assumptions behind dowry weddings, health problems,
and the benefits of education for girls and women. Jayamati's lecture
is part of Thursday Sangha Night.
Jayamati will also be doing
a one-day storytelling workshop on Saturday, April 20 (more
about Jayamati's workshop). More
about Jayamati.
