What is the FWBO?

The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) was founded in 1967, and the Western Buddhist Order (WBO) in 1968, when 12 men and women were ordained by Sangharakshita. A newer school of Buddhism dedicated to re-expressing the unity of and fundamental teachings of Buddhism in a way that is relevant to people in modern, industrialized societies, the FWBO is now an international organization with over 60 centers in many countries, and with over 1,500 ordained Members. (What is an Order member?) Most Order members are in the UK and in India. In Spanish-speaking countries the FWBO is known as as Los Amigos del Orden Buddhista de Occidente (AOBO), in France as Les Amis de l’Ordre Bouddhiste Occidental (AOBO), and in India as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha (TBMSG).

Sangharakshita and many of his disciples in the FWBO have written books on Buddhism and the practice of Buddhist life in the modern world, many of which are published by Windhorse publications.

The main site for the FWBO which has much more information about it is fwbo.org. There is also an online collection of Sangharakshita's poetry and other writings at sangharakshita.com. Some more websites of interest:
